Bird Flu in Croatia

A diary of events from Drazen Bilicic, detailing how bird flu was found in Croatia and the series of events that unfolded.

21st Oct. 2005 – It was official - the government confirmed that the bird flu virus was found in 6 swans, which are living at a fish pond in Grudnjak near Zdenci in Slavonija.

The area where the bird flu was found was putt in the quarantine.

22nd Oct. 2005 – The team of veterinary surgeons start killing all poultry in the infected area. The government ban all bird shows and also ban keeping birds in the open air.

23rd Oct 2005 – The vets continue with the killing of poultry. All poultry houses were desinfected.

24th Oct 2005 – The poultry which the veterinary couldn't kill (because the hens, ducks etc. where runing and flying around) where killed by a special police unit. They are killing poultry with rifle with a telescopic sight.

The local population where frightened. The shooting lasted all day, and all poultry in this area where killed.

25th Oct. 2005 – The government make a promis that they will pay a money for every hen, chichen, cock, duck or goose which is killed.

This is a price list given from the government:

  • chichen 2.5 Pounds
  • hen 4.5 Pounds
  • cock 5.5 Pounds
  • duck 10 Pounds
  • geese 10.5 Pounds
  • turkey 30 Pounds

The virus H5 virus was found in 2 more swans in a fishpond near Nasice. In this area, like in Zdenci, all poultry will be killed.

To this day 20,000 hens, chichens, cocks, ducks and geeses have been killed.
