"As a chicken can't be born without a chicken egg and a chicken egg can't be laid without a chicken. Both chickens and eggs are important!"

Eggs contain all the essential protein, minerals and vitamins, except Vitamin C. But egg yolks are one of few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D

Shell colour is determined by the breed of hen and is not related to quality, nutrients, flavour, or cooking characteristics. Generally speaking, although there are some exceptions - eggs with white shells are laid by hens with white feathers. Eggs with brown shells are laid by hens with brown or black feathers

To tell if an egg is raw or hard-cooked, spin it! If the egg spins easily, it is hard-cooked but if it wobbles, it is raw.

maths lesson

The shape of an egg - its not round!

The actual mathematical description is an oblate spheroid.

The word spheroid means an object looks like a spere, but isn't. That's because an egg isn't perfectly round. The word oblate means that the poles of the egg are flattened or depressed.

So an egg is a not a shape virtualy like a sphere but with flattened sides. You could say that it's an oval with one end larger than the other.

An average hen lays 300 to 325 eggs a year. A hen starts laying eggs at 19 weeks of age.

The egg shell may have as many as 17,000 tiny pores over its surface. Through them, the egg can absorb flavors and odors. Storing eggs in the carton helps keep them fresh.
