Show Report Annual National Australian Pekin Show 2005

Held at Maitland NSW

The Pekin Bantam Club of Australia held its annual show recently at Maitland NSW. The 2 Day event attracted exhibitors from all over once again. This year’s open judge was Dean McKenzie from Bangalow NSW, while the juniors & novice were handled by Peter Hicks of Buchanan NSW.

This years champion bird was a black cockerel owned by Allan Featherstone, Allan also took out reserve champion with a black cock. Opposite sex to Grand champion went to a lovely white hen owned by Cath Sheil from Rossmore NSW. Best pullet was an excellent black owned by Neville Blanch from Gloucester. Best other than black or white went to a Brown Red owned by A. Featherstone. Phil Pickles from Bendigo won the pairs while Phil’s daughter Elizabeth won both the novice & junior awards. Most successful exhibitor of the show went to Mathew & Jacqueline Gould of Eungai Creek. This years dinner was held at the historic Maitland Water Works & everyone who attended would agree this was the best evening ever. Next year will be our 50th show and plans are already under way to make it a very special event.

Judges Report M Dean McKenzie:
The Show attracted 260 Pekins and I found strongest classes in numbers and quality were the Blacks. The Grand champion, a black cockerel showed depth, width and natural carriage with good head and feather colour, the reserve champion a Black cock not far behind just lacked the width of the winner. The Opposite sex a white hen showed great carriage and depth and was beautifully shown. Blacks had a strong cockerel class. Winning Pullet showed herself beautifully, other pullets will make great hens. Winning Black Hen of good type. Brown red hen, best typed female in show just lacked the type of winner. Very good buff hen & Pullet hen was the best showing good type and carriage, undercolour still a bit weak in some birds. Whites were a mixed lot but some neat pullets. Winning pair (P Pickles Vic) best mated pair Male strongest of the lot. Breeding pair must have a good male to head them up. Winning Team ( A Featherstone)consisted of brilliant single birds and the Pair was carried by the individual birds
