We
understand that a club has been formed for the purpose of looking after
the interests of the Pekin bantam. The subscription will be 5s. (shillings),
and it is intended to provide classes at more shows for Pekins and to
divide the colours. The present committee are Messrs. Edwin Wright, J.
F. Entwisle, J. W. Binns, T. Garnett, and the hon. Sec., Mr James Whitley
of Main Street, Bingley. Circulars will be sent to all known exhibitors
of the variety asking them to support the club.
Carrying on from this, on November 1st 1901 the
same magazine published the following:
Report of the first Pekin Club Show, part of Kendal Show, 23rd - 24th
October 1901
Notes:
The Pekin Club show which was held here found plenty of work for the judge, Mr J. F. Entwisle. Her Majesty the Queen sent four exhibits of young whites, but only received an hc, for her birds were, though well shown, were far too long on leg.
The Buffs were the best supported classes, and here it was, perhaps, that any difference of opinion existed between judge and exhibitors. In cocks and cockerels Mr Entwisle chose the deeper shade of colour, and this was the bone of contention, it being argued that the ruddy shade should not be encouraged in the show pen. The hens and pullets were well placed, Mr Whitley’s pullet being much admired, and was ultimately claimed at catalogue price, £16, by Dr Jackson, of Rock fame. [i.e. he was at leading breeder of Plymouth Rocks] To Mr Whitley stands the distinction of breeding three of the best Buff Pekin pullets that have been shown this season. As far back as the Royal Lancashire Show he brought out a very choice chicken, which was sold to Messrs Heys at a round price. This bird did a lot of winning, but suffered defeat at Bingley, when Mr Whitley staged another ‘gem’, which gained premier position. This latter bird also fell into the hands of Messrs Heys, and at Kendal came second to Mr Whitley’s exhibit before mentioned. We hear she will be at the Palace [Crystal Palace exhibition hall, London], but, of course, might be beaten there by another colour. She is hardly up in hand yet, and is not the best of showers [i.e., not mature, and nervous] It was, however, a most popular decision. Another pullet of special merit was Mr Leech’s third.
The adult Whites were very good, but the winners stood clear away. In Blacks the first and second winning old cocks were in adjoining pens, and perhaps two birds of nearer equal merit were never before so closely placed. The Buff cockerels were capital, but some inferior specimens were to be seen. Mr Edwin Wright penned three, and secured first and second with ease, although some thought they showed too much black in flights and feet. Still, their ideal shape and uniform top colour pulled them through. [very old prints of Buff Pekins show they had some black in foot feather, wings and tail then] In young Whites Messrs. Heys’ bird, the St Helen’s and Bingley cup winner, easily led, and was the judge’s choice for the special for best in show from this section. He is so near perfect that it would be hard for an expert to find fault with him.
